Paul Siskind

"The result is a successful and varied collection of fresh yet approachable new music, with something appealing for every musical taste. "

Composer, Paul Siskind Reviews
"Resonance: Chamber Works-Vol. I"

Resonance is an impressive first CD from New Tertian Recordings. The nine works on the disk present an eclectic sampling of current compositional styles. Most of the pieces are of modest scope: chamber music cast in single movements. No single style, technique, or aesthetic perspective predominates any of the pieces. Rather, they draw upon a variety of styles/techniques of the previous century, synthesizing them rather than self-consciously striving to be experimental. The result is a successful and varied collection of fresh yet approachable new music, with something appealing for every musical taste.

The disk is supported by strong performances and polished production values. The performances are not only technically proficient, but are also musically thoughtful as well; even the difficult solo works on the disk are performed convincingly. The sound quality of the recordings is clear and balanced, even for the works that were recorded in live performances. An additional helpful feature is that scores for the pieces are available directly from the New Tertian Recordings website (which is informative and easy to navigate); sample pages and sound clips are available on the site as well.

Paul Siskind joined the Crane faculty in 1998 and has had music commissioned and performed across the U.S. and abroad by the Minnesota Orchestra, the Arditti String Quartet and the Dale Warland Singers. He has worked as a composer-in-residence for the education department of the Minnesota Opera and as an auditor for the New York State Council on the Arts. Dr. Siskind hold degrees in composition from the University of Minnesota (Ph.D.), Queens College (M.A.) and the Crane School of Music (B.M.), as well as a B.S. in biology (Phi Beta Kappa) from Tufts Univeristy. Patrick Kerber

"This is an outstanding collection of contemporary chamber music with music by four young composers who no longer simply show promise, but have proven themselves mature, successful artists."

Guitarist, Patrick Kerber Reviews
"Resonance: Chamber Works-Vol. I"

The standard description, "something for everyone" may be indeed be shopworn, but for the New Tertian release "Resonance", the phrase applies. This is an outstanding collection of contemporary chamber music with music by four young composers who no longer simply show promise, but have proven themselves mature, successful artists. The scope of the presentation keeps the listener constantly surprised, with instrumentation as varied as solo guitar, solo tuba, to saxophone quartet, to more traditional ensembles of voice and piano and a string trio. The music as well, runs the gamut of modern tonal language, from William Price's lush and atmospheric saxophone quartet, Prayer for the Forgotten, to John Crabtree's humorous and virtuosic, Beasts in the Window for solo tuba (this writer has heard solo tuba music in the past - trust me, this works!), to the taxing Celestial Horizons for string trio by Carlo Vincetti Frizzo.

The liner notes' bios of the performers (and composers) read like a "Who's Who of ambitious artists" with too many awards to count. Suffice it to say that all involved perform with exceptional virtuosity. There is a freshness in this presentation as a number of the pieces are actually live recordings, but don't expect to be distracted by coughing and air conditioning hum. The production value is of the highest standard, and does not fall into the trap of unbalanced presentations that such varied compilations often fall into. The live recordings obviously are not there because they are the only recordings of the pieces - the performances are excellent. This is a first rate recording of first-rate new chamber music.
